Graduated from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, where he majored in applied physics. Worked as a patent lawyer, and served as an active member of various citizens’ movements. Elected to the House of Representatives in 1980, now serving his tenth term. Has been minister of health and welfare and president of the Democratic Party of Japan; became DPJ acting president in April 2006.
