How to book the shinkansen as a foreign visitor

Which booking site covers which line, the 30-day booking window, why foreign cards get declined, oversized luggage rules and what Tokyo to Osaka really costs in 2026.

Illustration for Shinkansen

The shinkansen (bullet train) links Japan's major cities. You can book online in English, but each rail company runs its own booking site, and foreign cards fail more often than they should. This guide walks through which site to use, when to book, how to pay, how to get your ticket, and what the main routes cost.

Quick answer

Book on the rail company's own site, from 30 days out.

  • Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka–Hiroshima–Fukuoka: SmartEX. Tokyo–Sendai, Kanazawa, Niigata: JR-EAST Train Reservation. Western Japan: JR-WEST Online Train Reservation.
  • Seats open at 10:00 Japan time, one month before departure. Outside peak dates you can usually book on the day.
  • Tokyo to Shin-Osaka by Nozomi: ¥14,720 reserved, ¥13,870 non-reserved (adult, one way, regular season, October 2026).
  • Bags over 160 cm (length + width + height) need a seat with an oversized baggage area, booked in advance.

JR-WEST Online Train ReservationWestern Japan, including Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen and limited express trainsOsaka–Hiroshima, Kansai Airport–Kyoto

If your trip uses more than one line, for example Tokyo to Kanazawa and then Kanazawa to Kyoto, you may need two sites. Booking platforms such as Klook resell tickets across several lines in one place, usually with a QR-code ticket; compare their price with the official site before paying.

Step by step: booking on SmartEX

  1. Register with an email address and a payment card. Membership is free. You can also link an IC card (Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and others) to use as your ticket.
  2. Search your date, stations and number of passengers. Pick a train: Nozomi is fastest, Hikari stops a little more, Kodama stops everywhere.
  3. Choose a seat type: reserved, non-reserved, or Green Car (first class). Use the seat map to pick a window or an oversized-baggage seat if you need one.
  4. Pay and complete the card's 3D Secure check.
  5. Get your ticket: tap your linked IC card at the shinkansen gate, or use the QR ticket SmartEX issues. Keep the booking email.
  6. Change if you need to. SmartEX lets you change trains free of charge before departure, as long as you change before the booked train leaves.

When to book

  • Seats open at 10:00 Japan time, one month before departure.
  • SmartEX and JR-EAST also accept advance requests up to 7 days before that.
  • Outside peak seasons you can usually book on the day.
  • During Golden Week, Obon and the New Year holiday, and on some long weekends, every Nozomi between Tokyo and Hakata becomes reserved-seat only. JR Central lists the dates on its Nozomi page; in the coming months they include 21–23 November 2026 and 25 December 2026 to 5 January 2027. Book early for those dates.

Paying with a foreign card

All three sites take Visa, Mastercard, JCB and American Express (SmartEX also takes Discover), but they require 3D Secure verification. Payments fail when:

  • your card is not enrolled in 3D Secure,
  • your bank blocks the charge as suspicious, or
  • the text message code does not reach your phone abroad.

Warn your bank before you travel, and keep your home SIM switched on for texts even if you use a travel eSIM for data (see getting data in Japan). If online payment keeps failing, buy at a station ticket machine or JR ticket office with your physical card. No 3D Secure step is needed there.

Tickets and boarding

  • SmartEX and JR-EAST: link your Suica, PASMO or ICOCA and tap straight through the gate. SmartEX can also issue a QR ticket.
  • JR-WEST: collect paper tickets from a station machine using your booking number and the card you paid with.
  • Find your car number on the ticket or booking, then the matching number painted on the platform. Trains stop precisely and dwell only a minute or two.
  • Non-reserved cars are at the front of most Tokaido trains (Nozomi cars 1–2 on most days). Queue at the marked spots.

What Tokyo to Osaka costs

Ticket (adult, one way, regular season)Fare
Nozomi, reserved seat¥14,720
Nozomi, reserved seat booked on SmartEX¥14,520
Non-reserved seat (any train)¥13,870
Nozomi, Green Car (first class)¥19,590

Reserved seats cost ¥200 less in the off-peak season, ¥200 more in peak season and ¥400 more on the busiest days. Non-reserved fares do not change by season. JR Central has announced that Nozomi reserved fares will rise for tickets bought from 1 July 2027; Tokyo to Shin-Osaka goes to ¥15,420.

Other popular routes (Nozomi, reserved, regular season)Fare
Tokyo – Nagoya¥11,300
Tokyo – Kyoto¥14,170
Tokyo – Hiroshima¥19,760
Tokyo – Hakata (Fukuoka)¥23,810
Shin-Osaka – Hiroshima¥10,950

Worked example: two adults, Tokyo to Osaka

Estimate Regular season, one way, October 2026 fares.

OptionPer personTwo adults
Nozomi reserved, bought at the station¥14,720¥29,440
Nozomi reserved, booked on SmartEX¥14,520¥29,040
Non-reserved seats¥13,870¥27,740

Non-reserved saves about ¥1,700 for two, but on busy days you may stand or wait for the next train, and there is no oversized-baggage seat. For most visitors a reserved seat booked on SmartEX is the best balance. If you are also planning Hiroshima or Fukuoka within a week, check whether a Japan Rail Pass pays off instead.

Big suitcases

On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, bags with total dimensions (length + width + height) over 160 cm and up to 250 cm need a seat booked with the oversized baggage area, behind the last row of the car. The reservation itself is free. Without it, you pay a ¥1,000 fee on board and must put the bag where the crew tells you. Bags over 250 cm are not allowed at all. Most large check-in suitcases are over 160 cm, so measure yours. If you would rather not deal with it, send the suitcase ahead.

Nozomi, Hikari or Kodama?

TrainStopsTokyo – Shin-OsakaJapan Rail Pass
NozomiFewest; the main cities onlyabout 2 h 30 minNeeds an extra ticket
HikariA few moreabout 3 hFully covered
KodamaEvery stationabout 4 hFully covered

Nozomi trains run several times an hour, so on the Tokaido line you rarely wait long. If you hold a Japan Rail Pass, the Hikari is the usual choice.

Choosing a seat

  • Ordinary cars have seats in rows of three (A, B, C) and two (D, E). A and E are window seats.
  • Travelling as two, book D and E. As three, book A, B and C.
  • Want legroom for a bag? The last row of each car has the oversized baggage area behind it; the first row has a little more room in front.
  • Green Car seats are in rows of two and two, wider and quieter, and worth considering on long trips such as Tokyo to Hiroshima or Fukuoka.
  • Seats swivel. Groups of four can turn a row to face each other; ask the people behind first.

Common mistakes

  • Booking on the wrong site. SmartEX does not sell Tokyo–Kanazawa; JR-EAST does not sell Tokyo–Osaka.
  • Waiting for the 10:00 opening on a peak date without being logged in and ready. Popular trains on holiday weekends go within minutes.
  • Missing a reserved train. On the same day you can usually ride a later train in a non-reserved car, but not on all-reserved Nozomi days.
  • Bringing a large suitcase without a baggage seat. It costs ¥1,000 and some stress.
  • Riding a Nozomi on a Japan Rail Pass without the extra NOZOMI MIZUHO ticket.
Mount FujiBetween Tokyo and Kyoto, Fuji is visible on the right side going west (seat E in ordinary cars) on clear days.

FAQ

How far in advance can I book the shinkansen?

Seats go on sale at 10:00 Japan time one month before the travel date. SmartEX and JR-EAST also take advance requests up to a week before that.

How much is the shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka?

A Nozomi from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka costs ¥14,720 for a reserved seat and ¥13,870 for a non-reserved seat (adult, one way, regular season, October 2026). Booking a reserved seat on SmartEX saves ¥200.

Why was my foreign card declined on SmartEX?

Usually the card is not enrolled in 3D Secure, your bank blocked the charge, or the verification text did not reach your phone abroad. Buying at a station ticket machine with the physical card avoids the 3D Secure step.

Can I take a big suitcase on the shinkansen?

Yes, but on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen any bag over 160 cm in total dimensions needs a seat with an oversized baggage area booked in advance. The booking is free; without it you pay ¥1,000 on board. Bags over 250 cm are not allowed.

Is a reserved seat worth it?

On weekdays outside holidays a non-reserved seat is usually fine and ¥850 cheaper on a Nozomi. On weekends, holidays or with large luggage, book a reserved seat.
