Osaka in two days, plus Universal Studios Japan
Where to stay and eat in Osaka, a two-day plan, 2026 USJ ticket prices and Super Nintendo World entry, and whether the Osaka Amazing Pass pays off, with worked costs.
Osaka is louder, cheaper and more food-obsessed than Tokyo. It is also the easiest base for Kyoto, Nara and Kobe day trips, and home to Universal Studios Japan (USJ). Two days gives you one for the city and one for the park.
Day 1: the city with an Osaka Amazing Pass. Day 2: Universal Studios Japan, opening to close.
- Stay in Namba for food and nightlife, or Umeda for trains to Kyoto and the airport.
- USJ 1-day Studio Pass: from ¥8,400 for adults (from 1 September 2026); prices change by date and can rise with demand. Buy online in advance; there are no gate sales.
- Super Nintendo World needs a timed entry on busy days, booked in the official app after you enter the park, or an Express Pass that includes it.
- Osaka Amazing Pass: ¥3,500 for 1 day or ¥5,000 for 2 days, same price for children. Worth it if you visit three or more included sights.

Where to stay
| Area | Good for | Getting to USJ |
|---|---|---|
| Namba and Shinsaibashi | Food, nightlife and shopping on your doorstep; Nankai trains to Kansai Airport | About 30–40 minutes with one or two changes |
| Umeda (Osaka Station) | Trains to Kyoto, Kobe and the airport; big department stores | About 15 minutes on the JR line, some direct trains |
| Bay Area near USJ | Only worth it if you are spending two days in the park | Walking distance |
Business hotels in Osaka typically cost ¥7,000–11,000 a night, noticeably cheaper than Tokyo or Kyoto. Prices jump on weekends, holidays and during big events, so book early for those.
What to eat
| Dish | What it is | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Takoyaki | Batter balls with octopus, from street stalls | Dotonbori, Shinsekai, any station area |
| Okonomiyaki | Savoury cabbage pancake cooked on a griddle | Namba, Umeda; many places cook it at your table |
| Kushikatsu | Deep-fried skewers. Dip once in the shared sauce only. | Shinsekai |
| Kitsune udon | Udon with sweet fried tofu, an Osaka classic | Udon shops across the city |
Many smaller places take orders through a ticket machine at the door, and Osaka's standing bars and izakaya are among the cheapest in Japan.
A two-day plan
- Day 1 (city, with an Amazing Pass): Osaka Castle Museum at 09:00 → Kuromon Market for lunch → Shinsaibashi shopping street → Tombori River Cruise on the Dotonbori canal → Dotonbori at dusk → Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku for kushikatsu.
- Day 2 (park): Universal Studios Japan, opening to close.
- Extra half day: Kaiyukan aquarium and the Tempozan Ferris wheel in the Bay Area, or a Nara or Kyoto day trip.
The Osaka Amazing Pass
A digital pass on your phone that gives unlimited rides on Osaka Metro, Osaka city buses (some routes excluded) and private railways within Osaka City, plus free entry to about 40 attractions.
| Version | Price | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | ¥3,500 | One calendar day (03:00 to 02:59) |
| 2 days | ¥5,000 | Day of first use and the next day |
| Itami Airport version, 1 / 2 days | ¥3,800 / ¥5,400 | Adds the monorail from Osaka Itami Airport |
| Kansai Airport version, 28 hours | ¥5,300 | 28 hours, plus one Nankai ride from Kansai Airport to Namba |
Adults and children pay the same, so it is rarely worth it for young children. Each attraction can be entered once. The pass does not cover JR lines or USJ.
Worked example: does the 1-day pass pay?
Estimate One adult, regular admission prices listed on the official pass site (October 2026); transport assumes four subway rides at about ¥240.
| Day 1 stop | Price without pass |
|---|---|
| Osaka Castle Museum (main tower) | ¥1,200 |
| Tombori River Cruise | ¥2,000 |
| Tsutenkaku Tower observation deck | ¥1,500 |
| Four subway rides | about ¥960 |
| Total | about ¥5,660 |
| 1-day Osaka Amazing Pass | ¥3,500 |
Three paid sights and a few rides save about ¥2,000. Add the Umeda Sky Building observatory (¥2,000, included only until 15:00) and it saves more. Only one or two sights? Pay as you go with an IC card.

Universal Studios Japan: tickets
- Prices change by date. From 1 September 2026, the adult 1-Day Studio Pass starts at ¥8,400. USJ's price calendar has shown busy dates up to ¥11,900, and prices for a given date can rise after release as it gets busier. If the price rises after you buy, you do not pay the difference.
- Children (4–11) and seniors (65+) pay less. Under 4s are free.
- No gate sales. Buy online in advance: on the official site or app, or from authorised resellers such as Klook.
- Install the official USJ app and register your ticket before you go. You need it for timed entry and wait times.

Super Nintendo World and Express Passes
- Super Nintendo World (Mario Kart, Yoshi's Adventure and Donkey Kong Country) often needs an Area Timed Entry Ticket on busy days. Get it free in the app after you enter the park; slots go fast, so do it first. On quiet days you may walk in.
- Express Pass is an extra-cost add-on that cuts waits on a set list of rides. Some versions include a guaranteed time for the Nintendo area. Prices rise with demand and popular dates sell out, so decide early.
- Arrive before the stated opening time. Gates often open early on busy days, and the first hour has the shortest queues.
| Approach | Cost on top of the ticket | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Studio Pass only, arrive early | None | Weekdays outside school holidays |
| Studio Pass + a smaller Express Pass (fewer rides) | Varies by date | Weekends, holidays, short visits |
| Studio Pass + a larger Express Pass (more rides) | Varies by date, highest | Peak dates when you want to ride as much as possible |
Getting to USJ
Take the JR Yumesaki line to Universal City station. From Osaka Station it takes about 15 minutes, with some direct trains; otherwise change at Nishikujo. The station is a few minutes' walk from the gates. Coin lockers and luggage storage at the station fill up early on busy days.

- Starting the digital pass before 03:00. A 1-day pass started just after midnight ends at 02:59 that night.
