Universal Studios Japan Express Pass: which one, and is it worth it?

How USJ Express Passes work in 2026, current starting prices, timed slots, Super Nintendo World entry, when they go on sale and sell out, and the free alternatives in the official app.

Illustration for USJ Express Pass

Universal Studios Japan (USJ) is one of the busiest theme parks in the world, and its most popular rides regularly have waits of well over an hour. The Universal Express Pass is the park’s paid queue-skip ticket: it lets you use a shorter Express line on a fixed set of attractions, once each. It is expensive, and it is often the difference between doing six big rides in a day and doing three.

Quick answer

Buy an Express Pass if you visit on a weekend, a holiday or in a school break and you cannot face hours of queuing. Choose one that includes Super Nintendo World area entry if that is a must.

  • Prices start at about ¥11,800 and go above ¥21,800, change by date and rise as stock sells. Every age pays the same.
  • It is an add-on. You still need a park ticket (the 1-day Studio Pass is from ¥8,400 for adults).
  • Some rides are at a fixed time you choose when you buy. Buy your whole group’s passes together.
  • Sales open about two months ahead and popular dates sell out.

How the Express Pass works

  • A fixed bundle. Each Express Pass covers a set list of attractions, for one use each. The number in the name (4, 5 or 7) is how many attractions it covers.
  • Timed and untimed rides. For some attractions you choose a time slot when you buy. You must be at the ride in that window. Others can be used at any time during the day.
  • Area entry. Some passes include a guaranteed timed entry to the Super Nintendo World area, which can otherwise be hard to get into on busy days.
  • Same price for everyone. There is no child price for Express Passes.
  • Park ticket needed. The Express Pass is not an entry ticket. You need a Studio Pass for the same day.

The current line-up and starting prices

USJ changes its Express Pass line-up through the year and prices vary by date and remaining stock. These are the starting prices listed on the official Japanese ticket page in late October 2026. The price you see for your date may be higher.

Express PassFrom (per person)Notes
Express Pass 7: Trolley & Selection¥21,800Includes Super Nintendo World area entry guarantee
Express Pass 5: Adventure Special¥18,900
Express Pass 4: Trolley & Jurassic Park¥14,800
Express Pass 4: Theater & Flying Dinosaur¥14,800
Seasonal sets (for example Halloween Express Pass 4)from ¥11,800Offered for the seasonal event period only

Read the exact list of attractions on the product page before you buy. Two passes with the same number can cover very different rides, and whether a pass includes Super Nintendo World area entry or a specific Nintendo ride makes a big difference to its value.

When to buy, and where

  • Sales start about two months before your visit date. Each pass is sold in limited numbers and popular dates sell out, especially weekends, Japanese holidays, the Halloween season and Christmas through New Year.
  • Same-day sales exist but end when the day’s stock is gone. Do not count on them.
  • Official web store: pay by credit card up to the day of your visit, or at a convenience store until three days before.
  • Lawson Ticket: the official partner sells passes until the day before.
  • Travel platforms such as Klook resell official passes for a set date and can be easier with a foreign card. Compare the price with the official store for your date.

Buy every pass in your group in one transaction. Because the timed rides are allocated per purchase, separate purchases can leave your group with different ride times.

On the day

  1. Bring the whole ticket screen. USJ uses direct-in QR codes. Show the full ticket screen at the gate and at each ride, not a cropped screenshot.
  2. Check your timed slots in the morning and plan the rest of the day around them.
  3. Use the untimed rides early while the standby lines are shorter, or save them for the afternoon peak; either way, use them all before closing.
  4. Install the official USJ app and register your Studio Pass. You need it for the free timed entry system and to see waiting times.

The free alternative: Area Timed Entry

On busy days the Super Nintendo World area is limited to people with a timed entry. Without an Express Pass that includes it, you get this free Area Timed Entry Ticket in the official app, once you are inside the park. Register your Studio Pass in the app first. When the timed entry tickets for the day run out, the app may offer a standby lottery instead; check the app for its cut-off times. Timed entry is not guaranteed, so if Super Nintendo World is the reason for your trip, an Express Pass with area entry is the safe choice.

Is it worth it? A family example

Example Starting prices only; your date may cost more.

Plan for three peopleCalculationTotal
Studio Pass only (adult price shown)from ¥8,400 × 3from ¥25,200
Studio Pass + Express Pass 4from ¥8,400 × 3 + ¥14,800 × 3from ¥69,600
Studio Pass + Express Pass 7from ¥8,400 × 3 + ¥21,800 × 3from ¥90,600

That is a lot of money. It is worth it when the alternative is a day of queues: weekends, holidays, school breaks and the first visit for a family who will not come back soon. On a quieter weekday outside school holidays, many people manage with a Studio Pass, an early start and the free timed entry.

Children’s Studio Passes cost less than the adult price shown, but children pay the full Express Pass price.

How to choose

  • Super Nintendo World is the priority: pick a pass that says it includes area entry, and check which Nintendo ride it covers.
  • Big thrill rides are the priority: a 4-attraction pass that includes the rides you care most about is often the best value.
  • Young children: check height limits before paying for a ride a child cannot go on.
  • Cheapest option for a busy day: a seasonal 4-attraction set, when one is on sale.

The Have Fun in Kansai Premium Pass, which bundles a USJ ticket with other Kansai sights, is another way in; see Osaka in two days, plus USJ. The Osaka Amazing Pass does not include USJ.

A day with an Express Pass

Example How a family might plan a busy Saturday with a 4-attraction Express Pass and one timed slot in the early afternoon.

  1. Before opening: arrive early with your Studio Pass and Express Pass ready in the app or on your phone.
  2. First hour: queue normally for a popular ride that is not on your pass, while lines are at their shortest.
  3. Late morning: use one or two untimed Express rides as standby queues grow.
  4. Early afternoon: be at the timed ride a few minutes before your window opens.
  5. Afternoon: use the remaining Express rides during the peak, when standby waits are longest.
  6. Evening: shows, shopping and any rides with short waits before closing.

Check the waiting times in the official app through the day, and remember that each Express ride can be used once.

Buying for a mixed group

  • Everyone who wants the shorter line needs their own Express Pass, including children, at the same price as adults.
  • Check rider rules first. Some rides have height limits or age guidance. A pass that includes a ride your child cannot board is wasted money for that child.
  • Grandparents or non-riders can skip the Express Pass and meet the group after each ride.
  • Same order, same times. Buy everyone’s passes together so the timed rides line up.

Common mistakes

  • Buying the Express Pass without a park ticket. It does not get you in.
  • Buying passes for one group in separate orders. Your timed rides may not match.
  • Missing a timed slot. Arrive at the ride within the window shown on the ticket.
  • Assuming every pass includes Super Nintendo World. Only some do.
  • Waiting until the week before. For weekends and holidays, buy as soon as sales open.
