What to book before you go to Japan, and exactly when
A booking timeline for a first Japan trip: hotels, USJ Express Pass, teamLab, Pokémon Cafe, the Ghibli Museum, Shibuya Sky, the shinkansen and airport trains, with the release dates and times that matter.
Most of Japan does not need booking. Temples, markets, trains on the day and most restaurants work fine without planning. But a handful of popular things sell out on the day they are released, and a few only sell tickets in advance. Missing the release date is the most common reason visitors miss out. This guide puts those dates in one place, in Japan time (JST, UTC+9, no daylight saving).
Book hotels first, then anything with a fixed release date: the Ghibli Museum (10th of the month before, 10:00 JST), Pokémon Cafe (1st of the month before, 18:00 JST), USJ Express Passes (about 2 months ahead) and teamLab. Trains can wait until a month before.
- 4–6 months ahead: hotels, especially for cherry blossom season, autumn in Kyoto and New Year; ryokan earlier still.
- About 2 months: USJ Express Pass and teamLab Planets.
- The month before: Pokémon Cafe, the Ghibli Museum, shinkansen, the Fuji Excursion and the Skyliner.
- Two weeks or less: Shibuya Sky sunset slots.

Hotels
Hotels are the one thing to book as soon as your dates are fixed. In peak periods, the best-located, best-value rooms go months ahead: cherry blossom season (late March to early April), Golden Week (late April to early May), autumn leaves in Kyoto (November) and the New Year week. A refundable rate costs a little more but lets you book early and adjust later. For areas and room types, see hotels in Japan.
Ghibli Museum
The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka sells tickets only in advance, for a set date and entry time. Tickets for the following month go on sale on Lawson Ticket at 10:00 JST on the 10th of each month. Prices are ¥1,000 for adults, ¥700 for ages 13 to 18, ¥400 for ages 7 to 12 and ¥100 for ages 4 to 6; under-4s are free. Be online at 10:00 JST on the 10th if you want a weekend or holiday slot.
Pokémon Cafe
The whole next month opens at 18:00 JST on the 1st of the month before. December 2026 opens on 1 November 2026 at 18:00. Bookings are only on the official site, and resale is not allowed. Full details are in how to book Pokémon Cafe.
Theme parks and teamLab
- Universal Studios Japan: park tickets are sold online for a set date; there are no gate sales. Express Passes go on sale about two months ahead in limited numbers, and weekends and holidays sell out. See USJ Express Pass explained.
- teamLab Planets: online only, no tickets at the venue. Changeable up to three times, until two hours before.
- teamLab Borderless: sold online on teamLab’s site and Klook; same-day tickets are sold if any are left, for ¥200 more at the venue. See teamLab Planets or Borderless.
Shibuya Sky
The rooftop observation deck above Shibuya Scramble Square sells timed tickets online up to two weeks ahead. Online adult tickets cost ¥2,700 for entry before 15:00 and ¥3,400 from 15:00, against ¥3,000 and ¥3,700 at the counter. Child tickets (¥1,200) are sold only at the counter. If a time slot sells out online, it is sold out at the counter too, so book sunset slots as soon as they open.
Trains
| Train | Book from | Need to book ahead? |
|---|---|---|
| Shinkansen | 10:00 JST, one month before | Only for peak dates or big luggage; see how to book |
| Fuji Excursion (Shinjuku–Kawaguchiko) | 10:00, one month before | Yes on weekends; all seats are reserved |
| Keisei Skyliner | One month before | Optional; buying online is cheaper (¥2,310) |
| Narita Express | Online in advance | Optional; the round-trip ticket is collected at Narita |
| Local trains, subway, Yamanote line | Never | Use an IC card |
If you fly into Narita, compare the two airport trains in Skyliner vs Narita Express. If you land at Haneda, see Haneda to Shinjuku.
What you do not need to book
- IC cards and day passes: buy or set up on arrival. See Suica, PASMO and ICOCA.
- Most temples, shrines and gardens: pay at the gate.
- Most restaurants: walk in, especially at lunch. Book only for special meals, popular sushi counters and Christmas Eve.
- The Osaka Amazing Pass and Hakone Freepass: buy shortly before you use them.

Put each release time in your calendar with your home-time conversion.
Release times in your time zone
Most Japanese booking windows open at 10:00 or 18:00 Japan time. Japan stays on UTC+9 all year. These conversions apply from 1 November 2026, after Europe and the United States have ended daylight saving time.
| Japan time | London | New York | Sydney | Singapore |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10:00 JST (shinkansen, Ghibli Museum, Fuji Excursion) | 01:00 | 20:00 the day before | 12:00 | 09:00 |
| 18:00 JST (Pokémon Cafe) | 09:00 | 04:00 | 20:00 | 17:00 |
The New York column shows the trap: a 10:00 JST release falls on the previous evening in the Americas.
Japan’s busiest travel periods
Book everything earlier if your trip overlaps any of these. Japanese families travel at the same times, so trains, hotels and attractions all fill together.
- Cherry blossom season: late March to early April in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
- Golden Week: a cluster of public holidays from late April to early May.
- Obon: mid-August, when many people return to their home towns.
- Autumn leaves: November is one of the busiest months of the year in Kyoto.
- New Year: roughly 28 December to 3 January. See Japan in December.
How to book without stress
- Make a list with dates and times as soon as your itinerary is fixed, using the timeline above.
- Put each release in your calendar in your own time zone, with a reminder 15 minutes before.
- Create accounts in advance on the sites that need them, so you are not filling in forms when tickets go on sale.
- Have a back-up date for anything that sells out in minutes.
- Use official sites or authorised sellers. The official sites list who is allowed to sell their tickets.
- Screenshot your confirmations but keep the live ticket on your phone; some venues and buses do not accept screenshots.
If something has sold out
- Pokémon Cafe: people cancel, so check the booking site again in the days before your visit. Walk-ins are only possible when there are same-day cancellations.
- teamLab: Borderless sells same-day tickets if any are left. At Planets, try other times; ticket holders can move their slot up to two hours before, which frees up space.
- USJ Express Pass: same-day sales continue until the day’s stock is gone, but do not count on them. The free Area Timed Entry in the official app is the fallback for Super Nintendo World.
- Shibuya Sky: if a slot is sold out online, it is sold out at the counter too. Try an earlier slot before 15:00, which is also cheaper.
- Shinkansen: seats sell out only on peak dates. Try a different departure, or a train with unreserved cars.
Common mistakes
- Converting JST wrongly. Japan is UTC+9 all year.
- Booking non-refundable hotels before other plans are fixed.
- Buying from unofficial resellers for places that ban resale, such as Pokémon Cafe.
- Booking everything. Leave free time; most of Japan works without a reservation.
